And now something of a bio about this Vinny Davis guy …
Vinny Davis is a self taught, multi-talented musician, record producer and visual artist with quite an unconventional approach to making records.
He has been most commonly compared to the late Frank Zappa,
whom he lists as one of his influences in addition to: Todd Rundgren,Kate Bush and John Lennon.
Between 1989-1996 Davis used to record under his own label Frighteningly Original Records. From his mom’s Bronx basement
home studio, Vinny recorded anything and everything under a slew
of pseudo-band aliases like; REAR, AIRBRAND, KINDER GENTLER
PYGMIES, GOOD AFTERNOON and RJ THE GURU LAMA WITH
LAMBSHANK REDEMPTION.
Davis; not unlike "The Keebler Elf", created an assembly line for
record making. Churning away, song after song, with some
assistance from a stable of unstable musicians, entertainers
and outpatients. This established F.O.R. as a very prolific indie label.
After many funny and favorable reviews, a small fan base within NYC
began to emerge. Vinny affectionately calls them his "subterranean suck lings" and they continue to suck to this day!
In 1999 Vinny began his "real" solo career, while pursuing part time work as a freelance cartoonist and an art instructor for children and adults.
During this period Vinny lived and worked on music out of his Westchester home studio, which he called, " Soundview Square Garden Records"(named after the street on which he lived; Soundview Street).
This is where he recorded some of his most challenging, memorable material and some of his most unusual, most notably "Mental Madness Cocktail" (2000). This teamed up Vinny’s musical skills with an off beat poet/stand up comedian named, Doug Peck (Falcon). Finally Vinny found a partner who could delight in songs about a "Vaginal Cyst" and Irritable Bowel Syndrome ("Coffee Poop").
Soundview St. is also where Vinny began honing his songwriting and audio engineering skills and consequently matured as a recording artist.
Vinny completed six of his own projects at the Soundview St address, "We Were Happy on the Prairie" (1999)"Succumb-Lit- Creek" (2000), "The Daily Haze" (2003), "Open Me Up" (2003), Music from," The Nightmare We Shared" (2003), "Spillage In The Village" (2004),
and "In The Direction You’re Falling"(2006) and "New & Improved
Sparkling Emptiness" (2007). Vinny, (a graphic artist by day) designs much of the art appearing on the covers of his CDs and manages an online t-shirt company (relictees.com) where his original designs and cartoon renditions of classic rock bands can be found.
In 2007 vinnydavismusic.com was launched, making Vinny’s entire catalog available to anyone and everyone. Vinny’s music can also be found on itunes and cdbaby.com. A CD of all new material is due out for late Summer 2008 titled, "Herd Enthusiasms".Vinny Davis currently lives in Fleetwood NY with his wife Jennie and his dog Skippy.
